1. Indications and Usage
Osteoarthritis: Symptomatic relief of osteoarthritis.
Acute Pain: Treatment of acute musculoskeletal pain, including muscle strain, sprains, and minor trauma.
2. Dosage and Administration
Route of Administration: For topical use ONLY.
Standard Dosage: Apply to the affected area once daily, or as directed by a physician.
Critical Administration Instructions:
Application: Remove the protective liner and place directly on the skin. Avoid applying to broken skin or mucous membranes.
Duration: Do not use for more than 7 days without consulting a physician.
Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly after application.
3. Mechanism of Action
COX Inhibition: Ketoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2).
Prostaglandin Suppression: This inhibition reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins, the mediators of pain and inflammation, thereby providing analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.
4. Safety and Warnings
Photosensitivity: May cause photodermatosis. The treated area must be protected from sunlight and UV radiation during and for 2 weeks after treatment.
Hypersensitivity: Contraindicated in patients with a history of asthma, urticaria, or allergic reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.
Systemic Absorption: Although primarily topical, systemic absorption occurs. Use with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, or cardiovascular risk factors.
Skin Irritation: Discontinue if severe skin irritation or contact dermatitis occurs.
5. Adverse Reactions and Clinical Research
Most Common Adverse Reactions: Contact dermatitis, skin rash, pruritus, erythema, and skin irritation at the application site.
Other Adverse Reactions: Rare cases of systemic absorption may lead to gastrointestinal symptoms, photosensitivity reactions, and allergic responses.
Clinical Research Highlights: Clinical studies have demonstrated that topical ketoprofen provides effective pain relief for localized musculoskeletal conditions with a lower risk of systemic gastrointestinal toxicity compared to oral NSAIDs.
6. Drug Interactions
Other NSAIDs: Concurrent use with oral NSAIDs or aspirin may increase the risk of systemic side effects, including gastrointestinal bleeding.
Anticoagulants: Concomitant use with heparin, warfarin, or antiplatelet agents may increase the risk of bleeding.
Diuretics and Antihypertensives: May reduce the efficacy of diuretics and antihypertensive drugs.
