1. Indications and Usage
Gastrointestinal Distress: Relief of symptoms associated with excessive gas in the gastrointestinal tract, such as bloating, abdominal pain, discomfort, and a feeling of fullness.
Preparation for Procedures: Used to reduce foam in the stomach and intestines prior to endoscopic examinations (e.g., gastroscopy) to improve visualization.
2. Dosage and Administration
Adults: The usual dosage is 50 mg to 250 mg (variable by formulation) taken three to four times daily after meals and at bedtime.
Children: Dosage should be individualized, typically ranging from 20 mg to 100 mg per dose, depending on age and weight, administered three to four times daily.
Administration: The tablets should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing to maximize the surface area of the dimethicone for effective antifoaming action.
3. Mechanism of Action
Antifoaming Agent: Dimethicone is a silicone-based polymer with a low surface tension.
Bubble Rupture: It works by altering the surface tension of gas bubbles trapped in the gastrointestinal mucous, causing them to coalesce and release the trapped gas, which is then easily expelled via belching or flatulence.
Non-Absorbable: It is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and acts purely locally within the gut lumen.
4. Safety and Warnings
Contraindications: Contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to dimethicone or any components of the formulation.
Gastrointestinal Obstruction: In cases of severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting, gastrointestinal obstruction must be ruled out before administration, as self-medication could mask serious underlying conditions.
Special Populations: Safe for use during pregnancy and lactation as it is not systemically absorbed.

Tolerability: Dimethicone is generally well-tolerated with a very low incidence of adverse reactions.
