1. Indications and Usage
Anticholinergic Effect: Relieves smooth muscle spasms and inhibits glandular secretions.
Pain Management: Used for gastric and duodenal ulcers, and colic associated with the gastrointestinal, urinary (renal), and biliary tracts.
2. Dosage and Administration
Adults: The usual dose is 10 mg to 30 mg per administration, 30 mg to 90 mg daily (divided doses).
Maximum Dose: The maximum single dose is 50 mg, and the maximum daily dose is 150 mg.
Administration: Oral administration.
3. Mechanism of Action
Muscarinic Antagonism: Belladonna extract contains alkaloids (such as atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine) that act as competitive antagonists at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors.
Physiological Effects: By blocking these receptors, the drug inhibits parasympathetic nerve impulses, leading to the relaxation of smooth muscles in the digestive and urinary tracts, and the suppression of gastric acid and other secretions.
4. Safety and Warnings
Contraindications: Contraindicated in patients with glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, gastrointestinal obstruction, and ulcerative colitis.
Special Populations: Use with caution in pregnant women, the elderly, and patients with hypertension, heart disease, gastroesophageal reflux, hyperthyroidism, or severe liver and kidney dysfunction.
