1. Indications and Usage
Liver Disorders: Indicated for the supportive treatment of chronic liver diseases, including chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and non-alcoholic or alcoholic fatty liver.
Toxic Liver Damage: Used in cases of liver damage caused by toxins, including mushroom poisoning (e.g., Amanita phalloides).
2. Dosage and Administration
Adults: The usual dosage is 1 to 2 capsules (105–210 mg) taken 3 times daily.
Administration: Capsules should be swallowed with water, ideally during or after meals to improve absorption and minimize gastrointestinal irritation.
Duration: Treatment duration varies based on the severity of the liver condition and should be determined by the treating physician.
3. Mechanism of Action
Antioxidant Activity: Silymarin acts as a potent antioxidant, scavenging free radicals and depleting reactive oxygen species that cause cellular damage.
Membrane Stabilization: It inhibits the binding of toxins to the hepatocyte membrane and promotes protein synthesis, facilitating the regeneration of liver cells.
4. Safety and Warnings
Contraindications: Contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to silymarin, marigold (Calendula), or other plants in the Asteraceae family.
Special Populations: Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 12 years of age have not been fully established. Use with caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women due to limited clinical data.
