Ferriprox® (Chinese brand name: Aobeianke®) is the commercial brand name of Deferiprone Tablets, an oral bidentate iron chelator developed by ApoPharma (Apotex Group). It binds excessive labile iron in the body to form water-soluble iron complexes that are excreted mainly through urine, reducing systemic iron overload and alleviating iron-induced damage to the heart, liver and endocrine organs in patients receiving long-term blood transfusions.
Main Indications
Treatment of chronic iron overload secondary to repeated blood transfusions in adult patients with thalassemia major;
Iron chelation rescue therapy for thalassemia patients who are intolerant to or refuse treatment with deferoxamine or deferasirox.
Clinical Research
Global multicenter phase III pivotal trials demonstrated that deferiprone achieves superior reduction in cardiac iron accumulation compared with parenteral deferoxamine, effectively cutting down the incidence of iron-related cardiomyopathy and life-threatening arrhythmia in heavily transfused thalassemia patients;
Registration clinical trials enrolling Chinese thalassemia patients verified stable control of serum ferritin and cardiac iron load, with efficacy and safety data consistent with global multi-center trial outcomes;
Domestic combination chelation clinical studies confirmed that combined administration of deferiprone with other iron chelators realizes comprehensive iron clearance in both liver and myocardium for patients with severe refractory iron overload.
Common Side Effects
Severe adverse reactions: Neutropenia, agranulocytosis (life-threatening myelosuppression requiring routine complete blood count monitoring), severe hypersensitivity reaction, acute liver function injury;
Common mild adverse reactions: Nausea, vomiting, epigastric discomfort, arthralgia, transient elevation of liver transaminases, headache, skin rash, trace zinc deficiency.
Approval Status in China
Ferriprox® (Deferiprone Tablets, specification: 0.5g per tablet, 30 tablets per box, import drug registration certificate No. HJ20140379) was approved for marketing in China in 2014. It is a prescription oral iron chelator for long-term iron overload management in patients with transfusion-dependent hematologic diseases.
