Akten® is the commercial brand name of Lidocaine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Gel, a topical amide local anesthetic developed by Akorn. It blocks sodium channels on neuronal membranes, inhibiting nerve impulse conduction and producing local anesthesia on ocular surface.

For surface anesthesia of the eye during ophthalmic examinations and surgical procedures.
Clinical Research
Clinical studies showed that lidocaine ophthalmic gel can rapidly produce ocular surface anesthesia within several minutes. Its gel formulation prolongs retention time on the cornea compared with lidocaine eye drops, maintaining stable anesthetic effect. Systemic absorption is minimal after topical ocular administration, with good local tolerance for short-term use.
Common Side Effects
Local ocular reactions: transient burning, stinging, conjunctival hyperemia;
Common mild adverse reactions: blurred vision, eye pruritus. Rare serious adverse events: hypersensitivity reactions, corneal epithelial injury.
