Zavicefta® is the commercial brand name of Ceftazidime and avibactam sodium, a fixed-combination antibacterial agent developed by Pfizer. Ceftazidime, a third-generation cephalosporin, inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis; avibactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor that protects ceftazidime from degradation by many serine β-lactamases. Together they exert bactericidal activity against resistant gram-negative pathogens.
Main Indications
Treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections in adult patients;
Treatment of hospital-acquired pneumonia, including ventilator-associated pneumonia;
Treatment of complicated urinary tract infections caused by susceptible gram-negative microorganisms.
Clinical Research
Pivotal phase III trials showed that ceftazidime-avibactam achieved non-inferior clinical cure rates compared with standard antibiotic regimens for these infections. It retains activity against carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales, meeting primary efficacy endpoints, and demonstrated a tolerable safety profile.
Common Side Effects
Gastrointestinal reactions: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
Hepatic adverse reactions: transient elevation of liver transaminases;
Other common reactions: headache, rash, infusion-site reactions. Severe hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis may occur rarely.
