1. Indications and Usage
Dry Eye Syndrome: Relief of symptoms associated with dry eye syndrome and keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
Ocular Surgery: Adjunct in ocular surgeries (e.g., cataract, glaucoma, corneal transplantation) to protect intraocular tissues and corneal endothelial cells.
Ocular Surface Injuries: Treatment of corneal and conjunctival epithelial injuries caused by trauma, contact lens wear, or drug-induced damage.
2. Dosage and Administration
Standard Dosage: One drop instilled into the conjunctival sac 3-6 times daily. Dosage may be adjusted based on symptom severity.
Concurrent Use: If used with other topical ophthalmic medications, administer at least 15-30 minutes apart to prevent washout. Ophthalmic ointments should be applied after drops.
Contact Lenses: Remove soft contact lenses before instillation and wait at least 15 minutes before reinsertion (unless the product is specifically approved for use with lenses).
Hygiene: Avoid touching the eye or conjunctival sac with the dropper tip to prevent contamination.
3. Mechanism of Action
Viscoelasticity: Sodium hyaluronate mimics natural tears, forming a stable, long-lasting viscoelastic film on the ocular surface.
Moisturization: It retains water due to its high hydrophilicity, keeping the eye surface lubricated.
Corneal Protection: It binds with fibronectin to promote epithelial cell connection and extension, accelerating corneal wound healing.
4. Safety and Warnings
Ocular Irritation: Transient stinging, burning, or foreign body sensation may occur upon instillation.
Hypersensitivity: Discontinue immediately if signs of eye irritation, itching, redness, or eyelid inflammation appear.
Post-Surgical Use: Residual drug in the eye after surgery may delay absorption, potentially causing transient intraocular pressure elevation.
Storage: Unopened vials should be stored at controlled room temperature. Multi-dose containers typically lose sterility after 28 days of opening.
5. Adverse Reactions and Clinical Research
Common Adverse Reactions: Eye irritation, blurred vision, lacrimation, and pruritus.
Rare Adverse Reactions: Hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., conjunctival hyperemia, eyelid dermatitis).
Clinical Research: Clinical trials have demonstrated that sodium hyaluronate effectively improves tear film stability, reduces ocular surface damage scores, and provides long-lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.
6. Drug Interactions
Topical Ophthalmics: No systemic interactions; however, concurrent use with other eye drops requires spacing to avoid dilution.
Preservative Incompatibility: Do not use with eye drops containing benzalkonium chloride, as this may cause turbidity.
7. Pharmaceutical Information
Active Ingredient: Sodium Hyaluronate.
Appearance: Colorless and clear viscous liquid.
Storage: Store protected from light. Keep tightly closed.
